Sylvania U is a ministry of Sylvania Church that provides free online discipleship classes for one simple purpose: to help people grow in their knowledge and love for Christ. So, no matter who or where you are, you’re invited to join us.

Were we in your shoes, we would have some questions before we started, so here’s an effort at proactivity!

1) How much does Sylvania U cost?

Nothing at all. To this point, God has provided all of the funding needed for us to offer each discipleship course to you entirely free.

2) What courses are offered?

You’ll find our course list, course descriptions, and course syllabi on our course overview page, which we call “Discover.”

3) Who can enroll?

Anyone. Sylvania U is a ministry of Sylvania Church, but our current target audience is the entire English-speaking world, although we pray that the U will one day cross language barriers!

4) What are classes like?

Most of our discipleship courses are comprised of relatively short video lectures, reading assignments, occasional other coursework (e.g. papers, forum participation), and quizzes.

5) How long are the courses?

Most lessons are designed to be completed in 30-45 minutes, and the number of lessons in each course varies from course to course.

6) How demanding is the workload?

We encourage Sylvania U students to complete course assignments in a timely manner (roughly 1/week) because we know what it’s like to be human. ;) Whether studying Scripture, dieting, or whatever else, we tend to stick with things long-term that we initially force ourselves into the habit of doing. That said, very Sylvania U course is designed for you to work at your own pace.

7) Who teaches the courses?

Phillip Dancy, senior pastor of Sylvania Church, will teach most of the Sylvania U courses, but any of our pastoral staff or elders may teach entire courses and/or serve as guest lecturers.

8) What does Sylvania U believe?

As a ministry of Sylvania Church, Sylvania U (quite happily) affirms the Sylvania Church statement of faith.

9) How do I register?

To register, click “Enroll/Login” and complete the very brief registration form. How brief is “brief?” If you click “Enroll” right now, you can register, enroll in a discipleship course, and begin your first lesson in less than 90 seconds.
